SATURDAY NOVEMBER 29TH 2014

HORSLEY HILL FC 2 V 2 HARTLEPOOL FC RESERVES

Horsley Hills winning home record came to an end when they were held to a 2-2 draw against a determined Hartlepool side. Hartlepool took the lead when the Hills keeper punched a lofted ball against the post for Lewis Murphy to pounce and score. The Hill then took control of the game and there passing football was a joy to watch. Deservedly the Hill equalised just before half time with a scorching 35 yard strike from centre forward Kyle Houshby. The second half saw both teams playing good attractive football. With 25 mins to go the Hill finished off some sustained pressure with a goal from MoM Frankie Hucks. Hartlepool pressed hard for an equaliser and just when the points looked to be in the bag for the Hill, Hartlepool grabbed a share of the spoils with an equaliser. Both managers agreed that the football played by both young sides was a credit to the league

WASHINGTON AGED PEOPLES TROPHY ROUND 2

BISHOP AUCKLAND RESERVES 8 V 2 FERRYHILL TOWN
In a competitive game, Bishop Auckland Reserves progressed to the next round with a comprehensive victory. Ferryhill did take an early lead, but Bishops came back strong with a hatrick from Lewis Dunn, two from Liam Bain and singles from Alex Cantwell, Connor McEvoy and Jordan Maughan. Man of the match was without doubt the Ferryhill Goalkeeper, who made a string of saves to keep it 8-2.

SHILDON RESERVES 4 V 0 SHERBURN VILLAGE WMC FC
A great team performance from the home team as Shildon run out 4 0 winners in round two of the Washington aged people's trophy. The home team started well and went in front courtesy of Shildon man of the match Joe Kerry. Sherburn then hit the bar with a stunning 35 yard effort from their man of the match Joe Simpson. The home team went two up soon after though with Cameron Wilkinson capping a fine game with his first goal for the club. Joe Kerry added a second before half time and at this time Shildon was rampant.  Sherburn responded well to some advice from the manager at half time but Shildon were stubborn in defence with Hayes and race dominating, two new fullbacks Dartnell and Thompson kept any threat from the flanks under control. Stephen Clifford then came off the bench to add a fourth for the home side and they were home and hosed. This was a good game from two teams who tried to play football on a good surface.

DURHAM COUNTY FA TROPHY ROUND 2

SEDGEFIELD NETPark FC 4 v 2 COUNDON & LEEHOLME YOUTH FC
Avery competitive with both teams having very few chances in the first half. Coundon shading the better chances, HT 0-0...... The game came to life when Brian Fairhurst capitalised on a defensive mistake to put Sedgefield 1-0 up. Fairhurst then hit the post, shortly after first Coundon were awarded a weak penalty 1-1(Bailsy) then Sedgefield were 2-1(Fairhurst). The game really opened up but Fairhurst completed his hat-trick on 70, 3-1. Coundon came back strong and pulled one back on 75mins 3-2, Sedgefield defended well and after 85mins put the game to bed with a fast breakaway ending with Marcus Brown been chopped down, up popped veteran Brian Fairhurst to cap off a great performance against his old club and finished well to put Sedgefield into the semi-final, FT 4-2

MURTON AFC 0 V 6 WHICKHAM SC
Murton were outclassed from start to finish by a Whickham team who showed their league superiority with some very good football. Going in 1-0 up at half time Whickham came out in the second half and quickly took the game away from Murton. Special mention to Murtons keeper Swinburne who was outstanding making a number of quality saves including a penalty save. Final score Murton 0 Whickham 6.

HYLTON SC 1 V 7 GATESHEAD RUTHERFORD
Hylton played a well organised Gateshead Rutherford for the northern alliance league in the quarters of the county cup, the biggest test. Hylton started the brightest and dominated the first 20 minutes of the game and found them 1-0 up from a Stephen moody goal. It seemed as though Rutherford had extra men on the field as they turned up the heat and scored a dubious penalty 1-1. After that Hylton died and Rutherford took control of the game, Hylton tried hard to play but the opposition were just too well organised for Hylton and they strolled to an impressive 1-7 win. Hylton did not give a fair reflection of them on the day and the boys are disappointed, but life goes on and Hylton will be back next year with more experience and fight.

Good luck to Rutherford who worked hard for the full 90 minutes

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 22ND 2014

SHILDON RESERVES 1 V 1 WHEATLEY HILL WMC FC
The game was abandoned due to fog after 30 minutes with the score at 1 1 Very disappointing to say the least.

HARTLEPOOL FC RESERVES 2 V 1 BRANDON UNITED RESERVES
The game was played in heavy conditions with Brandon showing more energy than the home team in the first half. FC struggled, keeping possession of the ball and found them under pressure on more than one occasion. Brandon looked strong in defence with the big no 6 dealing easily with the long balls and set pieces. It was Hartlepool who scored first against the run off okay when Ross Kidson picked the ball up in midfield, played a neat one-two with Sam Harrison and slotted it under the keeper. Sam Harrison doubled the lead when he finished a great ball just before the break. FC had more possession in the second half but Brandon never stopped working and their hard work was rewarded when a ball was bundled home after a free kick was launched into the packed box. FC kept their nerve to take all 3 points.

HYLTON SC 4 V 0 SHERBURN VILLAGE WMC FC
Hylton have faded in the last few league games so today’s fixture against a good physical Sherburn FC was a must win. Hylton started with 3-1-4-2, the same tactics that have previously worked well against Sherburn. Hylton started the game dominant and it lead to Wooton beating the offside trap within the first few minutes and made no mistake 1-0 woody Hylton pressed more and more with confidence and were 3-0 up within 20 minutes through humble and a take a bow son top corner strike for Catchiside, humble grabbed his second just before half time with some fine skill a poking it home 4-0 Sherburn had a man sent off just before half time which was a shame as he was the brightest of Sherburn’s players. HT 4-0 Hylton played the second half against a team full of heart and never gave up, Sherburn battled for every ball but couldn't find that goal they needed as Hylton cruised and dictated how the game was going to play out. FT 4-0 A great game for the neutral but Hylton were just to strong on the day, hats off to Sherburn though as they showed great pride.
Well done all concerned.

WALLSEND TOWN 19 V 0 FERRYHILL TOWN FC
Wallsend town were excellent from the off with a dominant performance in which a score line off 19-0 shows but that could of easily been doubled that. With some clinical finishing and some outstanding goals from Wallsend town and fantastic football. With 5 goals each from Wallsend town skipper Gary hall and In form Decka graham, a hatrick each for Ryan Arnott and Paul Thomson and some good goals from Connor Dixon and Connor brown Mick Pooley to round the onslaught of goals

MURTON AFC 1 V 2 BIRTLEY FC
The match started bright and at a fast pace with both sides creating chances at both ends, But on the 15' Birtley FC took the lead with a brilliant lob from debutante Jason McCartney. Both sides still went on to create chances but nothing come from it with Birtley FC clearing one off their own line to maintain there one goal lead after the first 45 minutes. Second half started the same way as the first half, all end to end action but on the 55' Jonathan Swift doubled Birtley FC's lead with a great header. Both Birtley FC and Murton AFC had good shouts for a penalty claim but the referee did not award either team. On the 76' Mark Ruddock pulled one back for Murton AFC to make it 1-2 and for the final 10 minutes Murton AFC pushed everyone up to find the equalizer but Birtley FC's defence battled on brilliantly and held on to their well deserved first away win of the season .

HORSLEY HILL FC 3 V 1 BISHOP AUCKLAND RESERVES
The first half saw both teams contribute to some excellent free flowing football. Against the run of play, Liam Bain saw his deflected shot loop over the Hills keeper, to put Bishops 1-0 up. However, this fired the Hill up and the pressure finally played when Andrew Taylor gave the Hill a deserved equaliser. From then on the Hill took control of the game, adding 2 second half goals; through commanding centre back Ryan Moore and an Adam Bell penalty. The result saw the Hill protect their 100% home record. 18 yr old Tom West was outstanding in the centre of the park for the Hill gaining the MOM award

HYLTON SC 2 V 3 SHILDON RESERVES

A game with very close score lines in previous matches but Hylton had an advantage with a home win in the county cup and expected another but Shildon reserves thought otherwise. It was Hylton who dominated from the start but could not find that clear cut finish, Kevin humble took action with a fine solo effort. 1-0 Shildon steady them and took advantage of Hylton on the counter attack, a low shot cleared off the line only to hit the defender on the ankle and found its way into the bottom corner. 1-1 Hylton pressed on and didn’t let this faze them, some fine play from midfield let in humble and he made no mistake, slotting in his second of the game. 2-1 ht Shildon came out second half a different team, winning battles in the middle of the park, first 15 mins Hylton were pushed back and with a mistake from the right full back Shildon were 1 on 1 and the striker slotted home. 2-2 After this Hylton turned up the heat with the Shildon keeper being the busiest of the two keepers but Hylton couldn't find a way through, with Shildon pushed back, reverted to long balls which Hylton found difficult to deal with and a miss placed pass from Hylton’s 18 yard box let in Shildon who scored with ease against the run of play. The game ended Hylton 2-3 Shildon. A fine battling performance from Shildon who never gave up and deserved the 3 points.

BISHOP AUCKLAND RESERVES 4 V 1 MURTON AFC
These two teams met each other for the second week running, with the home side full of confidence from their previous 8-1 victory. The game was very different however, with Murton much more competitive and physical than the previous encounter. The first half was an edgy affair, with Murton having a couple of long range effort going well wide. Bishop's looked composed and took the lead on 40 minutes after a perfect Callum Sweeney cross from the right found Lewis Dunn whose looping header was perfect into the far corner. The lead should have been doubled as Conner McEvoy was played through, only to somehow put his effort wide! The second half started brightly as Lewis Dunn doubled his tally. Michael Owen's perfect ball into the right channel was neatly crossed by Alex Cantwell, for Dunn to round the keeper. This seemingly kick started the pacy Bishop's attack. Callum Sweeny fired just over, before man of the match Dunn was fouled. Alex Cantwell missed the penalty, but converted the rebound. Murton found a way back into the game from another penalty, before Dunn notched his hat trick after a powerful run from Liam Bain allowed Dunn to simply tap in at the far post.

MURTON AFC 1 V 8 BISHOP AUCKLAND RESERVES
Bishop Auckland thrashed Murton 8-1 in a game they domineered from start to finish. Three early goals set the pace, even when Murton pulled the game back to 3-1, they were never really in it and bishop responded by making it 4-1 before half time. Murtons lack of discipline show when they were reduced to 10 through an act of stupidity, from there bishop romped adding 4 goals to top an emphatic and convincing performance.

Some great flowing football from Shildon in the first 10 mins put Sherburn on the back foot. Two great saves by Sherburn’s keeper David Pritchard kept it 0-0. Sherburn soaked up the pressure and started to get organised. The game then ebbed and flowed with chances falling to both teams. It took until the 35th min before the deadlock was broken a ball across Shildons box was met by Ryan Bell to slot home 1-0 Sherburn. 5mins later Shildon were level a great strike from striker Danny Thomas hit the back of Sherburn’s net 1-1. Shildon didn't throw the towel in and the last 5 mins saw them pile forward to try to salvage the game. Sherburn stayed strong and saw it out. A great game of football by both sides.

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 5TH 2014

BRANDON UNITED RESERVES 0 V 3 HORSLEY HILL FC
On a very misty cold night Brandon entertained high flying Horsley Hill at the Welfare Ground. The heavy rain over the previous 24 hrs meant that the Brandon pitch was soft and would test the player’s stamina. Horsley were quickly on the attack from the kick off and Brandon's defence was under considerable pressure. That turned out to be the story of the first half with Brandon on the back foot and a youthful and exuberant Horsley side being full of running. This limited Brandon to a few breakaway chances but they held out until the 40th minute before conceding to give Horsley a 1-0 lead at half time. In the second half Brandon had the slope and finally showed some attacking flair but for Horsley to score their second in the 65th minute. With the clock running down and some very tired Brandon legs on the pitch Horsley ran in three more goals in the last 15 minutes. Final score a possibly unjust 5-0 to Horsley. Horsley Hill were the best footballing side seen at Brandon for some time, full of running, passing and movement. A very good game of football to watch and after Brandon's Heroics at Wallsend at the weekend a little disappointing to lose so heavily. Goal scorers for Horsley Hill were Davison, Foster, Watson, Bell and Taylor. Man of the match for Horsley was Frankie Hucks and for Brandon was veteran keeper Bryan Potts.

But sloppy play led to Sedgefield equalising and taking it to extra time which they went on to claim the game 4-3.

HYLTON SC V SHILDON RESERVES
Hylton S.C faced a much improved Shildon reserves side the County Cup and the fixture didn't disappoint. Hylton started the brightest with short and sharp passing which reverted the away side to long ball tactics from kick off, confidence grew for Hylton and with some smart play down the right lead to a Stephen Moody goal. Hylton 1-0 Moody. Shildon now on the back foot stayed positive and levelled not long after with route one being key. Shildon are back in it 1-1. Hylton tried to stay focused but Shildon wouldn't let them settle, Hylton pressed more and more with time and finally scored again from the impressive martin hope, a ball bobbled on the edge of the box and hope(Ghandi) pounced with a fierce strike which left the keeper no chance. Hylton 2-1 Ghandi.  Hylton wanted to see the half out and re-group as both teams had worked really hard to try and control the game, a quick throw in down Shildon left caught Brian Carter napping and the Shildon centre forward chipped the on rushing Hylton keeper, classy goal 2-2 Half time. Second half was much of the same with Hylton having more shots and testing the Shildon keeper, Hylton made changes just after the break and were frightening going forward but couldn't find the finish that counted, Shildons centre half was having a game to remember and kept Hylton at bay, but Hylton kept the pressure on sensed blood. A ball through the middle lead to a corner and with a great ball in it fell to humble on the edge of the box who placed it in the bottom right corner.  Hylton 3-2 humble.  Hylton had some breathing space but Shildon soon pushed on gaining most of the possession the last 10 minutes, but couldn't break the Hylton back 3 down. Finished Hylton 3-2 Shildon a great game to be involved in and Hylton host Shildon again in the Durham alliance league in a fortnight’s time.

BISHOP AUCKLAND RESERVES 2 V 7 WHICKHAM SC
A tough day for Bishop Reserves against a very strong and quick Whickham side.
Play started well for the home team with good possession and a couple of chances keeping Whickham at arm’s length, however a ball played in behind the defenders gave Bishops keeper no option but to try and sweep the ball. He was second to the ball and as the Whickham player went to play the ball round him the keeper instinctively stuck out an arm.  The resulting free kick lead to the opener and a few mins later Whickham had doubled their lead. It then became one way traffic as some great quick play and passing got the better of Bishop and soon it was 6-0, good forward play and silly mistakes looked like it was only going to be one way traffic. Bishop did respond just before half time when Liam Bain found himself a bit of space out on the left to curl the ball home in off the top corner post and put Bishop on the score sheet. After the half time break Bishop looked to have learned from their early mistakes and battled hard in every challenge. Bishop earned a goal through their hard work after great wing play led to a cross that was picked up by centre forward Lewis Dunn; he kept his head and although looked to be going away from goal beat the retreating keeper and Whickham's goal line defenders to get another back for Bishop. Whickham's attacking momentum started again and scored another well worker goal to make it 7. There were more chances from both sides with Whickham hitting the bar and then being awarded a penalty for hand ball, only for keeper James Cleminson to beat away. Full time came and a much better performance in the second half, but the work in the first half from Whickham made it look a one sided game and full time score of 2-7. Congrats to Whickham and good luck in the next round. Bishop will look to build on the game when they return to league action with back to back games Vs Murton.

CHESTER-LE-STREET WHITEHILL 0 V 1 COUNDON & LEEHOLME YOUTH FC
Whitehill lost out to the only goal of the game when they went down 0-1 at home to Coundon in the Durham F A Trophy, Whitehill created the first chance of the game on 2 mins but the keeper saved well from a Stephen Wood shot. Coundon then had a chance to take the lead on 8 mins this time Scot Cresswell in the Whitehill goal made an excellent stop. The all important goal came on 28 mins when Stevie Johnson headed in a corner kick to give the visitors a 0-1 lead. Coundon had a chance to double the lead when they were awarded a penalty kick on 41 mins but once again Scot Cresswell saved well. H T 0-1 The second half saw Whitehill pile on the pressure without creating really clear cut chances but credit to Coundon they defended very well as a unit, Whitehill pressed right to the end of the game and the best chance of the half fell to Craig Mickle a minute from time but she shot wide.  An entertaining game which was a credit to the Durham Alliance League played out by two very good sides.
